What is an MSSP?

MSSP stands for managed security service provider: an outside specialist that monitors and manages some or all of your cyber security for you, usually on a subscription.

In short

An MSSP (managed security service provider) is a company that monitors and manages an organisation's cyber security on its behalf, usually on a subscription. Typical services include SOC and SIEM monitoring, managed detection and response, managed endpoint, email, firewall and identity security, vulnerability management and incident response, delivered by the provider or through vendor services it manages.

MSSP meaning in cyber security

In cyber security, MSSP stands for managed security service provider. An MSSP takes on the day-to-day operation of security for organisations that cannot, or would rather not, do it all themselves. Instead of buying tools and hiring people to run them around the clock, you subscribe to a service in which the provider monitors your environment, responds to threats and keeps your security controls working.

The definition is broad on purpose. Some MSSPs run their own security operations centre (SOC); others build their service on top of SOCs run by security vendors and add setup, management and escalation. Some cover a single control, such as a firewall; others cover the whole estate. What they share is that the provider is responsible for an ongoing security outcome, not just for selling you a product.

(In US healthcare, MSSP also stands for the Medicare Shared Savings Program, which has nothing to do with cyber security. This page is about the security meaning.)

What does an MSSP do?

The exact scope depends on the contract, but most MSSP work falls into a handful of activities:

  • Monitoring: collecting alerts and telemetry from endpoints, identities, email, cloud services, firewalls and servers, often 24/7
  • Triage and investigation: working out which alerts are real attacks, what happened and how far it has spread
  • Response: containing confirmed threats, for example isolating a device, ending a session or disabling an account, within limits agreed in advance
  • Management of security controls: policies, exclusions, updates, rule changes and integrations on endpoint, email, firewall and identity tools
  • Vulnerability management: scanning for weaknesses, ranking them by risk and tracking fixes
  • Incident response support: helping you through a serious incident, either within the service or through a retainer
  • Reporting: service reviews, incident write-ups and evidence for auditors, insurers and regulators

The value is in the combination. Tools detect; people decide and act. An MSSP provides the people and process that turn a console full of alerts into a response.

How MSSPs deliver round-the-clock cover

A 24/7 SOC needs enough trained analysts to staff every shift, plus detection engineering, threat intelligence and tooling. Building that is expensive, so MSSPs tend to use one of three models:

ModelHow it worksWhat to ask
Provider-run SOCThe MSSP employs the analysts and runs the SOC itselfHow many analysts cover nights and weekends, and where are they?
Vendor SOC, managed by the MSSPThe MSSP supplies a vendor's MDR or SOC service and handles setup, management and escalationWhich vendor runs the SOC, and what does the MSSP do on top?
Co-managedYour IT team shares the work with the SOC and the providerWho owns each task, and what can you see?

Forever Systems uses the second model, with co-managed options. The 24/7 monitoring comes from vendor services such as Sophos MDR, Check Point MDR, Cisco XDR Premier and WatchGuard MDR; we choose the right one, set it up, manage it and handle escalation with you. Our pages on the security operations centre and co-managed SOC explain these models in more depth.

Who uses an MSSP and why

MSSPs are most useful to organisations that need security operations but cannot justify a full in-house team. Typical reasons include:

  • No out-of-hours cover: the IT team works office hours, but attacks often start at night or at weekends
  • Skills: detection and incident response are specialist skills that are hard to recruit and keep
  • Too many tools: endpoint, email, identity and firewall consoles each raise their own alerts, and nobody has time to correlate them
  • Compliance and contracts: frameworks and customers increasingly ask about monitoring, logging and incident response; see UK cyber security compliance
  • Insurance: cyber insurers commonly ask about endpoint detection, MFA and monitoring when you apply or renew
  • Supply chain requirements: for example NHS England's cyber security charter for suppliers to the NHS asks signatories to commit to effective 24/7 cyber monitoring and logging of critical IT infrastructure; see cyber security for NHS suppliers

Sector pages cover the specifics for small businesses, financial services and law firms.

Benefits and limits of using an MSSP

An MSSP can give a small or mid-sized organisation security operations it could not build alone. It also changes how you work, so it helps to be clear about both sides.

BenefitsLimits to plan for
Monitoring outside office hours, from analysts who see attacks across many organisationsThe service only sees the data you connect to it, so gaps in coverage become gaps in detection
Access to detection and incident response skills without recruiting themAnalysts do not know your business; they rely on the context and contacts you give them
Fewer, better alerts reaching your own teamResponse actions only happen within the authority you agree, so decisions are needed up front
Evidence of monitoring and response for insurers, customers and auditorsAccountability for risk stays with your organisation; you cannot outsource the decisions
Costs that scale with users, devices or dataMoving provider later takes planning, so ask about exit terms at the start

None of the limits is a reason to avoid an MSSP. They are the reasons to choose one carefully, agree responsibilities in writing and keep someone on your side who owns the relationship.

MSSP, MSP and MDR at a glance

Three terms are often confused:

TermFocusTypical output
MSP (managed service provider)Keeping IT runningSupport, patching, devices, networks, backup
MSSP (managed security service provider)Keeping the organisation secureMonitoring, managed security controls, response, reporting
MDR (managed detection and response)Detecting and containing threats24/7 investigation and response actions

For the detail, see MSSP vs MSP and MSSP vs MDR. In short, an MSP looks after availability, MDR looks after threats, and an MSSP can manage a wider set of security services that includes MDR.

Before you sign up with an MSSP

Not all services labelled MSSP do the same thing. Some forward alerts by email and leave the response to you; others investigate and contain confirmed threats themselves, within limits you agree. Before you compare prices, compare what the service actually does: who runs the SOC, what it is allowed to do, what it can see, where your data goes and how you leave. Our guide how to choose an MSSP turns that into a checklist, and MSSP pricing explains how costs are built up.

How Forever Systems helps with managed security

We do not run our own security operations centre. The round-the-clock monitoring, investigation and response come from managed detection and response services that established security vendors already run at scale. Our part is choosing the right one for you, setting it up properly and staying involved.

  • Independent recommendation: we supply several vendor MDR, XDR and SIEM services, including Sophos MDR, Check Point MDR and Cisco XDR, so we can suggest the one that fits the tools you already own
  • Setup and onboarding: we can deploy agents, connect integrations such as Microsoft 365 and work with the vendor through tuning
  • Clear responsibilities: escalation contacts, response permissions and who does what are agreed with you in writing and confirmed at quote
  • Ongoing management: we help with policy changes, exclusions, renewals and regular service reviews
  • Wider security too: security awareness training, Cyber Essentials and cloud security advice

We work with businesses, schools, charities and public sector organisations across the UK.

Frequently asked questions

What does MSSP stand for?

MSSP stands for managed security service provider: a company that monitors and manages some or all of an organisation's cyber security on its behalf, usually on a subscription.

What does an MSSP do?

An MSSP monitors your systems for threats, investigates alerts, contains confirmed attacks within agreed limits, manages security tools such as endpoint, email, firewall and identity protection, tracks vulnerabilities, supports incident response and reports on what it has found and done.

What is the difference between an MSP and an MSSP?

An MSP keeps IT running: support, devices, networks and backup. An MSSP focuses on security: monitoring for threats, managing security controls and responding to incidents. Many organisations use both, and some providers offer both.

Is an MSSP the same as a SOC?

No. A SOC is the team and function that monitors and responds to threats. An MSSP is a provider that may run its own SOC or deliver one through a vendor service, usually alongside other managed security work such as firewall or email management.

Does an MSSP replace an in-house IT team?

Usually not. An MSSP takes on security monitoring and specialist work, but you still need people who understand your systems and can make business decisions during an incident. Many organisations run a co-managed arrangement in which the IT team and the provider share the work.

Are MSSPs regulated in the UK?

Not as a category yet. The Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, still before Parliament on 1 November 2026, would bring medium and large managed service providers that meet its definition into the NIS Regulations 2018, and the government's factsheet says managed services include managed security services such as SOC and SIEM. In-scope providers would register with the Information Commission, take appropriate and proportionate security measures and report significant incidents.
