MDR vs SOC vs SIEM: what is the difference?

MDR, SOC and SIEM are often used as if they were alternatives. They are not: one is a service, one is a team and one is a tool. Here is how they differ and how they fit together.

In short

MDR vs SOC vs SIEM comes down to service, team and tool. A SIEM is software that collects and correlates logs. A SOC is the team and processes that monitor and respond to threats, often using a SIEM. MDR is a service in which an external SOC detects, investigates and responds to threats for you, 24/7.

Three short definitions

  • SIEM (security information and event management) is a tool. It collects logs from across your organisation, correlates them into detections and keeps them for investigation and compliance. See SIEM as a service.
  • SOC (security operations centre) is a team, with its processes and technology. It monitors for attacks, investigates alerts and responds. See what is a security operations centre.
  • MDR (managed detection and response) is a service. An external SOC, usually the vendor's own, monitors your environment 24/7, investigates and takes agreed response actions. Our cloud security site explains managed detection and response in depth.

Put simply: a SOC uses tools such as a SIEM to do its work, and MDR is a way of buying a SOC's work as a service.

MDR vs SOC: managed SOC or MDR?

If you are comparing MDR with a managed SOC (SOC as a service), you are comparing two ways of buying the same kind of capability. The differences are mostly about emphasis:

  • MDR is built around detection and response on a defined set of tools, often the vendor's own EDR or XDR, with a strong focus on containing threats quickly.
  • Managed SOC is the broader label. It can include MDR, plus SIEM monitoring of wider log sources, compliance reporting and, in some services, more involvement from your team.

In practice, most managed SOC services on the market today are delivered as MDR or managed XDR. The questions that separate good from poor services are the same: what data the SOC sees, what it may do without asking, whether incident response is included, and how it reports to you. If your team wants a hands-on role, look at a co-managed SOC.

SOC vs SIEM

A SIEM without a SOC is a common and expensive mistake. The SIEM collects logs and raises alerts, but nobody reads them at night, and tuning falls behind. A SOC without a SIEM is possible for a small scope, because modern EDR and XDR platforms have their own detection and investigation tools, but it limits what the SOC can see and how far back it can look.

Most effective SOCs use a SIEM, or an XDR platform with SIEM-like data storage, as one of their core tools. If you need both logging and monitoring but have no security team, you can buy them together: a SIEM paired with a vendor MDR or MXDR service, which Forever Systems sets up and manages.

MDR vs SIEM

MDR and SIEM answer different questions:

QuestionPoints to
Who will act if we are attacked at 3am?MDR
Can we prove to an auditor what happened over the last year?SIEM
Can we see firewall, identity and Microsoft 365 events in one place?SIEM, or an MDR or MXDR service that ingests them
Our insurer asks for 24/7 monitoring and responseMDR
We have analysts but no central loggingSIEM

Many organisations end up with both, often from the same vendor. For a different comparison, of the technologies underneath (endpoint, extended and managed detection and response), see EDR vs XDR vs MDR on our cloud security site, and MSSP vs MDR for how an MSSP relates to MDR.

Where XDR and SOAR fit

Two more acronyms often turn up in the same conversation:

  • XDR (extended detection and response) is a platform that correlates detections across endpoints, email, identity, network and cloud. It overlaps with a SIEM, but it is built around detection and response rather than long-term log storage. Managed XDR, or MXDR, is MDR delivered across all of those sources; see managed XDR.
  • SOAR (security orchestration, automation and response) automates repetitive response steps with playbooks, such as enriching an alert, disabling an account or opening a ticket. It is a tool for a SOC, like a SIEM, not a service on its own.

Vendor platforms increasingly bundle these together. TrendAI Vision One, for example, combines XDR with Agentic SIEM and Agentic SOAR, and Sophos XDR adds third-party data, cross-product correlation and automated response playbooks to Sophos EDR. Whatever the label, ask the same questions: what data is covered, who watches it, and who acts.

Which do you need?

A rough guide, which we refine with you:

  • No security team, no out-of-hours cover: start with MDR on your endpoints and identities. Add a SIEM later if you need longer retention.
  • Compliance or insurer requires log retention: a cloud SIEM, ideally one that a vendor SOC can also monitor, such as a Todyl SIEM with Todyl MXDR or Blackpoint CompassOne Standard.
  • An IT team with security skills but no night cover: MDR with a collaborative response mode, or a co-managed SOC.
  • Your own security analysts: a SIEM such as Splunk Enterprise Security or Sophos Next-Gen SIEM, with MDR for out-of-hours cover if needed.

Forever Systems does not run its own SOC. We recommend, set up and manage vendor MDR, managed SOC and SIEM services, and handle escalation with you. Ask us for a quote, or contact us for an impartial recommendation.

How Forever Systems helps with managed security

We do not run our own security operations centre. The round-the-clock monitoring, investigation and response come from managed detection and response services that established security vendors already run at scale. Our part is choosing the right one for you, setting it up properly and staying involved.

  • Independent recommendation: we supply several vendor MDR, XDR and SIEM services, including Sophos MDR, Check Point MDR and Cisco XDR, so we can suggest the one that fits the tools you already own
  • Setup and onboarding: we can deploy agents, connect integrations such as Microsoft 365 and work with the vendor through tuning
  • Clear responsibilities: escalation contacts, response permissions and who does what are agreed with you in writing and confirmed at quote
  • Ongoing management: we help with policy changes, exclusions, renewals and regular service reviews
  • Wider security too: security awareness training, Cyber Essentials and cloud security advice

We work with businesses, schools, charities and public sector organisations across the UK.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MDR and SOC?

A SOC is a team and its processes and tools for detecting and responding to attacks. MDR is a service that gives you an external SOC's detection, investigation and response on a defined set of tools, usually 24/7. Most managed SOC services are now delivered as MDR.

What is the difference between SOC and SIEM?

A SOC is people and process; a SIEM is a tool that collects and correlates logs. A SOC typically uses a SIEM, but a SIEM on its own does not investigate or respond.

Is MDR better than a SIEM?

They do different jobs. MDR gives you people who respond to attacks; a SIEM gives you central, searchable logs and correlation. If you have nobody to act on alerts, MDR comes first. If you need long-term log retention or compliance evidence, you also need a SIEM.

Does MDR include a SIEM?

Some services do. Blackpoint CompassOne Standard includes SIEM with 365 days of log storage, Todyl MXDR runs on Todyl SIEM, and Check Point MXDR 360 adds a fully managed SIEM. Others, such as Sophos MDR, offer a SIEM as an add-on.

What is the difference between managed SOC and MDR?

Managed SOC is the broader term for outsourced security operations. MDR is a specific form of it focused on detection and response, often on the vendor's own platform. In practice the two overlap heavily.
