Managed EDR: what it is and how it differs from MDR

EDR gives you far better visibility of attacks than antivirus, but it also produces detections that someone has to understand and act on. Managed EDR is one answer to that problem; MDR is another. Knowing the difference saves money and avoids false comfort.

In short

Managed EDR is endpoint detection and response that a provider configures, tunes and helps you act on, so detections are not ignored. It differs from MDR, where a 24/7 security operations centre investigates and responds for you. Forever Systems manages EDR products and can add vendor threat hunting or full vendor MDR when you need it.

What managed EDR means

Endpoint detection and response records what happens on each device, spots behaviour that looks like an attack, and gives you tools to investigate and contain it: isolating a device, stopping a process, rolling back ransomware damage. It is a big step up from signature-based antivirus, but it is a tool, not a service. Out of the box it generates detections, and someone has to decide which ones matter.

Managed EDR means a provider takes responsibility for running that tool well. In practice that covers:

  • Deployment and configuration of the EDR agent and its policies across your estate
  • Tuning, so legitimate admin tools and line-of-business software do not drown real threats in noise
  • Detection review at intervals agreed with you, with clear advice on what each detection means
  • Response support, such as isolating a device or cleaning up after an incident when you ask us to
  • Health and coverage checks, so devices without the agent or with stale data are found and fixed

The phrase has no fixed definition, so ask any provider what it means by it. At Forever Systems, managed EDR is the management layer on top of your EDR product. It does not mean anyone is watching your endpoints through the night. That is MDR, and we deliver it through the vendor's own SOC.

Managed EDR works with the EDR products we supply from Sophos, Check Point, Cisco, WatchGuard, SentinelOne, Bitdefender, ThreatDown and TrendAI, and CrowdStrike Falcon customers can add Adversary OverWatch hunting. If your EDR is Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, which is included in some Microsoft 365 enterprise plans, you do not have to replace it: MDR for Microsoft Defender explains how a vendor SOC can watch the Defender licences you already own. The parent page, managed endpoint security, covers deployment and day-to-day management of the agents themselves.

Managed EDR vs MDR

The difference comes down to who is watching, when, and who acts.

Managed EDRMDR
Core ideaYour EDR is set up, tuned and looked afterA security operations centre monitors and responds for you

Threat huntingOnly if a vendor hunting service is addedPart of the vendor MDR services we supply; scope varies by service
Best forOrganisations with someone able to act on detections, or a tighter budgetOrganisations that need cover at night, weekends and holidays

Neither is better in the abstract. Managed EDR suits an organisation with a capable IT team that mainly needs the tool run properly. MDR suits an organisation that would not notice an attack at 2am on a Sunday until Monday morning. For the technology differences between EDR, XDR and MDR, see our explainer on EDR vs XDR vs MDR.

In between: vendor threat hunting services

Several vendors offer a lighter managed option between plain EDR and full MDR. Their analysts hunt through your EDR data around the clock and alert you to confirmed threats with remediation guidance, but you, or we, carry out the response.

ServiceWhat it addsWho responds
ThreatDown Managed Threat Hunting24/7 hunting for indicators of compromise, prioritised alerts for critical threats and step-by-step remediation guidanceYou, or Forever Systems where agreed
CrowdStrike Adversary OverWatch (in Falcon Advanced Defend)CrowdStrike's threat hunters look around the clock for hands-on-keyboard intrusions and alert youYou, or Forever Systems where agreed
SentinelOne Wayfinder Threat HuntingContinuous hunts through Singularity telemetry, with validated findings in your console and Flash Reports on emerging threats; an add-on to Singularity Complete and included in Singularity CommercialYou, or Forever Systems where agreed

These suit organisations that want expert eyes on their data without paying for a full response service, and have someone who can act on a confirmed finding promptly. If nobody can act out of hours, a hunting alert at night may wait until morning, and full MDR is the safer choice. The deeper discipline of threat hunting is explained on our endpoint security site.

When full MDR is the better choice

Move from managed EDR to MDR when any of these is true:

  • Nobody can act out of hours. Attacks do not keep office hours, and a detection that waits until Monday gives an attacker the weekend.
  • Your insurer or customers ask for 24/7 monitoring. A vendor MDR service gives you a clear answer.
  • Detections are piling up. If alerts are reviewed days later, the tool is not doing its job.
  • You hold sensitive data or face regulators. Containment speed matters for UK GDPR breach handling and sector rules.

The MDR services we supply run on the same agents as the EDR products: Sophos MDR, ThreatDown MDR, WatchGuard Core MDR, CrowdStrike Falcon Complete Next-Gen MDR, SentinelOne Wayfinder MDR, Bitdefender MDR, Blackpoint MDR and Check Point MDR among them. Moving up is usually a licence change and an onboarding exercise, although some services need a higher package first: SentinelOne, for example, lists Wayfinder MDR as an add-on to its Commercial and Enterprise packages. Our vendors page describes each one, and managed SOC services explains how vendor SOCs work.

Benefits of managed EDR

Done well, managed EDR delivers:

  • Fewer, better alerts: tuning removes the noise that makes teams stop looking
  • Full coverage: devices missing the agent are found rather than discovered after an incident
  • Faster decisions: clear explanations of what a detection means and what to do next
  • A path to MDR: the same agent and console, ready for a vendor SOC when you need one
  • Evidence: a managed console shows auditors and insurers what is protected and how incidents were handled

It is not a substitute for patching, backups or staff awareness. Pair it with vulnerability management and managed email security, since email remains a common way for attacks to reach an endpoint in the first place.

Comparing managed EDR services

Because "managed EDR" means different things to different providers, compare services on what actually happens when a detection fires:

  • Hours: when detections are looked at, and by whom, including nights, weekends and bank holidays
  • Authority: which response actions can be taken without asking you, and which need your approval
  • Tuning: how exclusions are requested, approved and reviewed, so they do not become blind spots
  • Escalation: how you are told about a confirmed threat, and what happens if nobody answers
  • Upgrade path: whether threat hunting or full MDR can be added on the same agent without redeployment
  • Reporting: whether you get records clear enough for your board, insurer or auditor

Ask for the answers in writing. With Forever Systems they are set out in your quote, alongside which parts the vendor delivers and which we do. Our guide to choosing an MSSP has a fuller checklist that applies equally to EDR services, and managed security services lists everything else we manage.

How Forever Systems manages EDR

Our approach is the same whichever vendor you use:

  1. Review your current EDR or endpoint product, its policies and coverage, and the people who can act on detections.
  2. Recommend managed EDR, a vendor threat hunting service or full MDR, with the trade-offs set out plainly.
  3. Configure and tune policies, exclusions and response settings, and confirm every device is reporting.
  4. Agree escalation in writing: who is told about what, how, and what may be done without asking.
  5. Review regularly with you, at intervals agreed at quote, and adjust as your estate changes.

Pricing depends on the product, the number of endpoints and the level of service, so ask us for a quote. Contact us to talk it through.

How Forever Systems helps with managed security

We do not run our own security operations centre. The round-the-clock monitoring, investigation and response come from managed detection and response services that established security vendors already run at scale. Our part is choosing the right one for you, setting it up properly and staying involved.

  • Independent recommendation: we supply several vendor MDR, XDR and SIEM services, including Sophos MDR, Check Point MDR and Cisco XDR, so we can suggest the one that fits the tools you already own
  • Setup and onboarding: we can deploy agents, connect integrations such as Microsoft 365 and work with the vendor through tuning
  • Clear responsibilities: escalation contacts, response permissions and who does what are agreed with you in writing and confirmed at quote
  • Ongoing management: we help with policy changes, exclusions, renewals and regular service reviews
  • Wider security too: security awareness training, Cyber Essentials and cloud security advice

We work with businesses, schools, charities and public sector organisations across the UK.

Frequently asked questions

What is managed EDR?

Managed EDR is endpoint detection and response that a provider deploys, configures, tunes and helps you act on. It makes sure the tool is working and its detections are understood. It does not by itself mean 24/7 monitoring; that is managed detection and response (MDR).

What is the difference between managed EDR and MDR?

Managed EDR is about running the EDR tool well and helping you act on detections, usually in agreed hours. MDR adds a security operations centre that monitors, investigates and responds to threats 24/7. With Forever Systems, MDR is delivered by the vendor's own SOC and we manage the service and escalation.

What are the benefits of managed EDR?

Fewer false alarms through tuning, every device covered, clear explanations of detections, evidence for auditors and insurers, and an easy path to MDR on the same agent when you need round-the-clock cover.

Is managed threat hunting the same as MDR?

No. Vendor threat hunting services, such as ThreatDown Managed Threat Hunting, look for threats around the clock and send prioritised alerts with remediation guidance, but you or your provider carry out the response. MDR includes the response.

Do small businesses need managed EDR or MDR?

It depends on who can act on a detection out of hours. If nobody can, MDR is usually the safer choice, because a vendor SOC can contain a confirmed threat at night or at the weekend. If you have someone who can act promptly, managed EDR or a vendor threat hunting service may be enough. Our page on managed security for small business sets out the options.
